Max Payne won't work

Recently it looked like I got the Blast worm, so I downloaded all the available XP updates and fixes from the Microsoft site (including 330638)
Since then not only the computer is slow and stodgy but the games won't work anymore - Max Payne for example won't start at all, Nightfire is chopped and out of synch... No suggestions in the Max Payne support site either..

Is it possible that new downloads actually only make Windows XP worse?

What video card do you have? The newer Max payne 2 (demo version, for
example) runs on my i845G based system.

But even on a clean XP system running the newest drivers for an ATI
Radeon, the first Max Payne game needs to have its video settings
tweaked before it will load. It will not load with the default
settings as loaded after install.

I have a P4 2.6 and both Max Payne' ran fine with no tweaking. You need to
install any game patches and update the card drivers. Payne 2 looks GREAT
but I don't like the game play as good as the first.

No. At least not currently. :)

Did you also remove the infected files with your A/V program? Since
antivirus and firewall programs are often attacked first by the
virus/worm/trojans you can try scanning with one of the free online
services. ie:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Some malware has to be removed manually. Some do so much damage to your
files that a reinstall of Windows is neccessary.

Patching Windows after the fact does not repair the damage a virus may have
already done to your system. You can try running SFC /scannow to
repair/replace damaged or missing system files. If that doesn't help you can
try doing a repair installation of Windows and re-install drivers and
updates. Also reinstall your antivirus and firewall software to make sure
that they are in working order.

I don't think the Max Payne thing is a virus issue at
all. I'm running XP Home & Pro on two PCs and the
original Max Payne will install but not go beyond an
irritating "Loading" message. This happens on both
machines & Norton & ZoneAlarm both tell me I'm clean.
The game is simply incompatible with XP as far as I can
see. Max Payne II runs fine on XP, so they obviously got
the problem started in time for the sequel.
