Max length for formula

What is the maximum number of characters permissible in a formula.
wrote a formula and at some stage it complained that the formula wa
too long - the length of my formula at that stage had 955 characters
This was in Excel 97. Is this a limitation in Excel 97 or all Excel?

I know of a get around but I was only trying to avoid storing
transistion value in another cell.

See Help for "Excel specifications and limits" subtopic "Calculation
specifications". The documented limit is 1024 characters, but that
deals with the number of characters in the interpreted formula. If you
are linking to cells in other workbooks, Excel will embed the path with
the workbook name.
