Hi,

I am trying to figure out the maximum file size that Vuescan
could generate out of a Leica format (35mm) color slide
with a Minolta Elite 5400 equipment.

The max I could get is approx 315mb (Raw Tiff no compression
5400dpi 64bit RGBI), but I remember reading somewhere about
400mb files and can't find that url again.

I understand multi-sample doesn't generate additional raw
info, it just averages (median?) samples into a unique value.

Two raw files (w/ and w/o Diffusion Plate) would require twice
the 315mb, but I'm looking for individual file size.

This is for planning archival storage for a large number of slides,
any info appreciated, thanks,

I think the calculation is easy:

Take the maximum scan area of the scanner and the maximum physical
resolution (scanning at higher resolution just gives interpolated values
and does not add any information).
Then muliply and multiply again with the number of bits per pixel
(24/36/48bit).
This should give you the maximum size of a scan.

if your slide is smaller (it likely is) you then can take this size for
the calculation.

Don't forget to add a few bytes per scan for organisational data
(depending on the image format you're using for storage).
If it is a compressed format (like TIFF LZW) of course your files will
be smaller ;)

24x36mm @ 5400ppi =
5102x7654 pixels x 4 channels x 2 bytes/channel = 312.4MB per image.
The size could be larger, only if you include some of the edge mask,
or if you attempt to compress the file.
