How can I cancel a MAX download? It has been executing for days, does not
complete and I cannot close the window. p.s; What exactly is MAX? I believe I
had to download it in order to make other downloads faster.

It probably belongs to the class of advertising software
that screams "take me, take me", e.g. by claiming "Your
PC is at risk. Click here to make it secure", or "Your
PC is not properly tuned. Click here to make it run at
twice the speed". The result is invariably the opposite of
what the visitor believes, and can cripple an installation.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, click the Applications tab, then
end the offending task and reboot your PC.

If you have been surfing for pr0n and you downloaded a "free viewer" or the
like, there is a very good chance that your computer is infected with more
than just the one malware. Be smart and scan for viruses/malware
systematically. There is no "free lunch" and the "free viewers" are usually
trojans (not *that* kind)!

Depending on the antivirus protection you have installed, you may also want
to include the scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, and Ewido as
described at the above link.

You cant force your downloads faster. You have been taken for a ride.

I think he's referring to 'Microsoft MAX' and is having trouble with the
'Automatic Updates'.
Try disabling 'Automatic Updates' & then go to 'Windows Update' & 'hide' the
download by expanding (click +) the update to read the details. Uncheck the
update & select 'Don't show this update again'. Then you either download any
other updates or just exit 'Windows Update'.
