Max Characters in filename

Hello,
I have recently has problems trying to save files under multiple folders
with long names, such as the following:
G:\Alphabet\Apple\Green\A\California\Orange.doc. But with much longer file
names and or folders. A couple of times I have been unable to open the files
and sometimes I have not been able to delete tthe fiels. Sometimes I will
receive a message that says I have exceeded the maximum nuber of charaters
and sometimes it will tell me that hte file can't be found that I just
finished saving.

Will someone please let me know the maximum number of character that can be
used from the path to the filename. Thanks in advance.

Max is 255 characters in folder and files, like your example
