mathematical expression in Word

can anyone tell me how to show something "to the power" of on word ie: 3 to the power of x where x will show smaller and to the top right hand side
 
Select the 'x' and apply the superscript font attribute.

For the second and third powers, hold down the Alt key and type 0178 and
0179 respectively on the numeric key pad.

or....Insert - Object - Microsoft Equatation.....there you can create whatever formula you want
