The Equation Editor is not installed by default in Word. If you are
trying to type an equation without the Equation Editor, then stop doing
it that way and install the Equation Editor from your Word or Office CD.

Once Equation Editor is installed, read Word's Help to see how to insert
an Equation Object. Read Help in the Equation Editor gram for more
information on using the Equation Editor. Both these documents were was
written by a professional writers and will be much better than anything
I can whip up on the fly here.

If you need additional followup, suggest you repost on the newsgroups
for Word as this really has nothing to do with Windows XP operating system.

There fonts for math functions, also you can use sub-scripts
and super-scripts and different font sizes.
You can get a tablet such as WACOM sells for about $99 and
write freehand if you just want to have the formulas. If
you get handwriting software such as is used by PDAs you
could have it translated.
There are third-party applications that allow direct
creation.

From the help menu (just type "math" to find help)
