Master Password

I made the mistake of entering an administraative password on my Windows XP Home Edition Dell desktop. It seems to serve no purpose but to harass me.

I am not asked for that password when I start the computer or start using a program or a file, but I will be asked for the password sometime during a session. It seems to come up most frequently when I fill out some form on the Internet (I generally use Netscape 7.1 for my Internet browser). I can satisfy the computer momentarily by either entering the master password (different from my log on password) or by simply closing the popup window asking for the password. Thus it seems to provide no security but is a nuisance.

However, I can't remember the part of the system that I used to enter this password, and the Windows XP and Dell help software have no entry for "master password", "system password", or "administrative password."

on the start menu go to run and in the dialogue box type "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes). There you can click on "administrator" and click reset password. When the reset password box comes up dont type a new password, just click ok. This should fix the problem.

I believe this is coming from Netscape. This may not be the right newsgroup.

Try, from inside Netscape,

Edit | Preferences | Privacy and Security | Master Password | Help.

Are you saying Netscape 7.1 provides no security and is a nuisance? Oh my.
Forget what I said. You are definitely in the right newsgroup!

The master password, or the password on the Administrator account, has
no relationship to the password you enter on the Internet. Unless you
just happened to make them the same.
