mass renaming

Is there any way to rename files with almost a find/replace approach? I have
many files in formats that I'd like to rename, and I'd like a convenient way
(more convenient than F2ing each name or right clicking) to rename them.

Thanks for any insight.

There are lots or programs to do this...

Example
http://www.publicspace.net/windows/BetterFileRename/index.html

Typically you search for files and compile a list of those you want to
rename. Then you sort the list by date or whatever then you specify how they
are to be renamed/renumbered. eg

oldname.xyz -> newname+number.xyz

Most programs allow you to copy the files to a new directory as they are
renamed or you can rename in place.
