margins won't change

My original document had 2" margins on the top and bottom. Now I need to
change them to 1" margins. When I use the usual procedure to change margins,
nothing changes. A 2" margin remains (above and below the header and footer
that is on the pages), even though the page setup reads 1". I have tried
highlighting the entire document and then clicked on applying the 1" margin
to selected text. I have tried copying the entire document into a newly
opened blank word file. Neither strategy has worked. Any suggestions?

I don't know if this will fix your problem but I tried using margins in Word
2000 right now. Open a document then select File then Page Layout. Enter
the margins. Make sure it says apply to whole document then click OK. Let
me know what happens.

Thanks for trying, Kaja - there is no Page Layout tab on the 2004 version
(that I can see) - I think it's been replaced by the Page Set Up tab, which
then probably has the same features as yours in which you enter the margins,
click to apply to the whole document, etc. This is what I've been doing but
it just doesn't work. I think something that I did when I set up this very
large document (including headers and footers, and various sections to
separate chapters) must be affecting the margins but I can't figure out what
to do about it.

I had one more idea. Word 2004 may be different than my Word 2000 but try
this. Click on help and enter "change margins" into the search field. It may
bring up a resolution. Hope it works.

Make sure that your header and footer margins are normal (0.5") and that
there is no extra space (Spacing Before/After, extra empty paragraphs) in
the header or footer.

Thanks for this idea. It led me to take a closer look at how the header and
footer could be influencing the problem. Here is what I discovered through
the office assistance when a phrase something like "change the position of
the header or footer" came up. Once I clicked on a header and had the
header/footer menu bar come up, I then clicked on a button there for "page
set up." There I could see that the horizontal position of the header was at
2.25" rather than 1". I was able to reset that, but it wouldn't apply the
change to the whole document - but I was able to reset the whole document by
going to the individual headers and footers in each section and changing the
measurements there. That worked! Thanks for you setting me in the right
direction !
