Margin marks in the print layout

I wonder if anyone can help me. Im using word 2003. All has been fine for a few weeks until recently i was using the merge and compare feature. since using it, i now seem to have aquired some annoying marks on document pages that wont go away. They appear almost like crop marks in corner of each page and they appear to mark out where the margins are, both left and right and top and bottom. It is obviously some form of visual guide to where the typing area is on the page

I have tried everything to turn them off but to no avail and they are begginning to really annoy me. Also, im not sure that by truning this feature n somehow i have also enabled or disabled something else. Since their appearance, the compare and merge featrure does not work properly, in that it simply inserts the contents of one of the documents without actually comparing both and giving you the option of rejecting changes one by one

hope someone can help
