Mapping drive issue

Dave

Hi,

My account is set up as a domain user. When I try to map C$ on any computer
on our network I'm asked for a username and password. Only on one computer
I'm not asked for username and password and I map the drive with
administrator privileges (I can do anything I want on the drive). What
could be causing this?

The remote machine is running win2k server (IIS and SQL Server) and the
permissions on C: are

Administrator - full control
Administrators - full control

I checked my account on the domain and I'm only a member of the domain users
group. On the remote computer my account is not in any group and there is
no duplicate local account.

If I log on as a different user I'm asked for a username and password when I
try to map C$ on the remote computer.

What can be causing my main account to have admin privileges to this drive?

Thanks!!!

Possibly you are logging onto your machine with the same logon name/password
as an administrator on that computer. Next time you are connected to that
drive use Computer Management/shared files/sessions to see how you are being
authenticated on that computer - it will show computer names and user in the
connections. --- Steve

Hi Steve,

I checked the sessions on the remote computer and I am connecting as
Administrator.

I checked my local computer and the remote computer and I don't have any
accounts with the same username as I am using. On my local machine and on
the remote machine under the Administrators groups it lists only
Administrator and Domain Admins.

On the domain controller I'm only a member of the Domain Users group.

Any ideas as to what else I can check?

Thanks!!!

Is that administrative share mapped as a drive using alternate credentials
from your computer?? Try logging off of your computer, change your password
before you logon, logon, do "net use * /d " and select yes if prompted for
good measure, and see if you can still access that administrative
hare. --- Steve

To add, if that all still works try changing the password for the built in
administrator account on the server. --- Steve

Have the permissions on the remote share been changed from the default ???

Obviously, this whole issue boils down either to:

1> Permissions; or
2> Matching username and password

Hi Steve,

Here's what I did.

Logged off, changed my password on domain server, changed password of
Administrator on domain server, logged on
did net use * /d
mapped drive and it maps like before
did net use * /d
Changed password on remote computer Administrator account
mapped drive, got the authentication dialogue with username already
populated with remoteComp\administrator
changed domain server Administrator account password back to the old one
mapped drive, got the authentication dialogue with username already
populated with remoteComp\administrator

Is it possible that I have checked the remember my password box before and
now it just remembers me as administrator? If yes, can I undo this?

I'll look more into it.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks!!!

I don't remember if I changed the permissions on the drive, but I don't
think I have.

What should the permissions on the C$ be on a Win2k Server machine that is
not a domain controller? Our other Win2k Server is a domain controller. I
don't think the permissions on the C$ drive of a domain controller are the
same as those of a non domain controller computer.

Thanks!!!

Hi Dave.

I take it then that changing the administrator password on the server now does
not allow automatic access?? It sounds like you are using an XP Pro box to
access the computer as I don't believe that W2K has the ability to remember
password except for mapping a drive which can be remedied by
disconnecting/deleting the mapped drive. If you are using XP Pro, then you may
have selected save the password at one time. To remove that you would have to
remove the entry in stored credentials by selecting control panel/user
accounts/advanced/manage passwords. See the link below for more
nformation. --- Steve
