map network drives

I have a laptop running XP Pro, that I use to connect to
the office w/ a VPN. The application I use, says I cannot
use mapped network drives. So, in My Network Places there
is an option to add a "network place." Is this really a
mapped drive or not? If it is, my app probably won't
work. If anyone can answer this for me, it would be
great. Thanks.

Can you ping the server(s) by name? What kind of VPN? Using WINS in the
office? If so, you ought to be able to specify the WINS server IP in your
local IP config....

If not, you'll probably need an LMHOSTS file -

Note - the padding spaces for the domain name (0x1b) entry are very
important - be sure not to miscount!

I can see the server if I add it to "network locations"
under My Network Places. I cannot see it in the
workgroup. I can ping it. The software I want to use,
accesses a database on the server, and the documentation
just says that I cannot use mapped network drives. So I
was just wondering if the "add a network place" function
in My Network Places is a mapped network drive or not. I
use the built in WinXP VPN.

Sorry, I misunderstood. If the software is expecting a UNC path, try
\\servername\share ....?

That is what I was thinking. I dont have the software
yet, to install it and try it, just the documentation. I
was just looking for a 2nd opinion/thoughts. I'll give
it the 'ol try and see what happens. Thanks!
