Many things such as drag and drop not working

J

Justin

Hi there,

Some very strange things occuring on a users
(unfortunately the VP's) laptop.

The situation was much like the one described in Knowledge
base article 274696; drag and drop isn't working, the user
can't reply from email in outlook express, and some other
functions in Windows 2000 aren't working.

I went into his laptop and checked the dmconfig settings,
they were incorrect. I fixed them according to the article
and they worked for a short while.

I also ran the registry fix from article 258549.

The user says he hasn't installed anything recently, and
the problem started happening about 2 days ago. Around
this period he says that he hasn't installed anything.

If anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it... I'm at a
loss.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin,

You can hit and miss by removing each hotpatch (if
they are archived), or you can do an "inplace"
upgrade, then reapply SP4 and the necessary
hotpatches. To do an inplace up grade, you need the
installation CD and administrator rights. And the
CD Key Serial.

Boot into the BIOS and change the first boot device
to CD-ROM. Place the CD in the tray, and restart
the computer. The boot up starts with you pressing
any key on boot. The boot disk files are loaded to
start W2K. At the end of loading, you will be asked
to Set up for install or repair. Choose Set up to
Install and you go thru the regiment like F8 for
accepting the EULA. You will be asked again for
"repair" or enter into a full install. We choose
"Repair". Files loaded will take a few minutes,
then prompt for language, press Enter. Then you need
the CD Key number. Then it takes several minutes to
load the balance of the files; then press Enter @
finish to reboot.

You need to go to Windows and install SP4. After,
do an Update to close the security holes and
install only the hotpatches that pertains to this
particular box.

Justin,

Oh, forgot to remind you to go back to the BIOS and
reset the first book order.
