many files in Windows/temp folder

H

Herbert C Lebovitz

Using Win XP Home.
I have 60 some files with the name
Perflib_Perfdata_xxx.dat
The xxx is different for each one.
They go back 2 years.
I also have some 50 .tmp files that go back same amount of time.
They are not text files
What are they??
Can I successfully delete them??

Hi Herbert,

The disk cleanup utility should allow files in the temp folder to be cleaned
up with no problem.

Here's what you do:
Click Start, Run
In the run line, type "cleanmgr" (w/o the quotes) and press <ENTER>
Select the drive you want clean up.
You will then be given a list of types of files you can clean up, you'll see
the estimated space each type of file is taking up as well.
Make sure Temporary files are checked.
Click OK

Files should clean out, your space should be restored!

Please let me know if that helps!

Cleanmgr didn't even list any of those files which are in windows/temp
directory.
What are they?? Where did they come from??

Hello again Herbert,

Do you have an application running to monitor your motherboard? I've found
issues where the application Motherboard Monitor creates them when
refreshing a monitoring session each time you power up Windows.

Are you running a performance monitor application? If so, you may want to
shut it off. I understand that these are locked files, so you will have to
start your computer in a command prompt to delete them. Here's how:

When you boot up your system press F8 to get the Windows Advanced Options
Menu.
Select Safe Mode with command prompt
System may have you sign in if you've set up accounts on your systme, and
will boot to a DOS prompt instead of going to Windows.

In the command line, type "del %windir%\temp\perflib_perfdata*.dat" (w/o the
quotes) and press <ENTER>
Once the files are deleted, type "shutdown -f -r -t 0" to reboot.

After you've let Windows reboot (this time normally instead of Safe Mode),
the files should be deleted from your temp folder.

Please let me know if this helps!

Hi Herbert,

Those files are OK, they are created by the Machine Debug Manager that
gets installed with Office to debug visual basic script.

If you don't need it, go to Start > Run > services.msc
Right-Click on the service, select properties and choose disabled,
reboot. You should be able to clean the files.

They definitely are not malware, nothing to worry about.
