Whenever I go to Microsofts website to search for windows updates, it won't
let me cause I have automatic upodates shut off. Why would this be? Shouldn't
I be able to manually update my computer as I see fit? Any help bypassing
this?

You need Automatic Updates in Services enabled to receive updates through
Windows Update automatically or manually.
You should disable Automatic Updates from System Properties:
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Automatic Update tab.
Make selections from that page.

U gotta have SERVICE ON but AU can still be set to
manual,auto, etc

You need the Automatic Update *service* enabled, even if you are not
letting it operated automatically. At Control Panel - Admin Tools -
Services double click on it and set Startup type to Automatic. It
probably ought to be named the Windows Update service to avoid the
confusion. You also need the Background Intelligent Transfer one on
Manual (or Automatic) - up date uses it to do downloads when asked
