Manual system restore

My pc (XP Home w/ SP1) mysteriously goes into standby, I presume, after about
1 minute. The screen goes blank/black and does not return no matter what I do
other than turning the power off then back on to have another minute. Tried
the "system restore" but 1 minute was not enough time to complete the
restoration. Remember vagely that you can also restore manually by starting
window via "safe mode" but don't know all the steps. Would welcome any other
idea than system restore as well.

Hi,

To start the system in safe mode and perform a restore follow these steps.

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to
start your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a command prompt.

2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account
that has administrator credentials.

3. In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box
then press Enter. In Safe Mode Command Prompt type the following command then
press ENTER.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer
to an earlier state, or undo the last restore if available.

If no obvious changes have been made to the Power setting or the BIOS, I would
suspect virus or malware infection is causing this.
