My DELL Inspiron 8200 with Windows XP Professional SP1 is experiencing COM port problems. In Device Manager only one modem is indicated and that is the internal modem in my computer. I have attempted to install another device using COM ports and when I try to assign a COM port my system shows COM ports 1 through 6 all being used. When I use "Advanced System Information" to check the system it shows multiple modems set up using COM ports 1 through 6. My internal modem is one of those, but the rest do not exist as far as I can determine. How can I get rid of the phantom modems that I can see in "Advanced System Information" but don't show up in "Device Manager"

Why not ask Dell support?

Your internal modem can connect to the Internet, it can fax
and it may have other functions, each might involve using a
different COM port setup.

What device are you attempting to connect?

I am attempting to connect a digital image camera by USB and this particular camera has to utilize COM3 to function properly. It is a specialty camera with its own connection software and will not work with any other application

USB is USB and not any COM port. XP software can connect to
most cameras and you can get a program called IRFanview
http://www.irfanview.com/ to interface with many cameras and
video sources.

Sorry, but like I stated, this is a highly specialized system that uses USB to connect a camera by assigning a modem to COM3. Since my COM3 is being used by some phantom device, I can't connect as it is designed to do. IRFanview will be totally useless with this particular application

I suggest you contact the maker of the device for tech
support, it certainly is not a MS Windows XP issue or even a
Dell issue.

You might look for some alternate device that does work
rather than trying to invent the wheel.
