It runs once automatically when it's installed. If it didn't give any
messages then things are good.

Actually, it depends on how you download it.

Windows Update, it works as you say, but if you download from this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

which downloads from this location:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...0b-5b397199cbf8/Windows-KB890830-V1.4-ENU.exe

Then you have to run the exe, follow the prompts, and you get an option
at the end to view a report of the scan.

Just trying to educate, not reprimand. :)

Understood, but they did say "via Microsoft's Automatic Downloads" :-)

Yep. My Bad! :)

I didn't see that part, but then I'm not much of a fan of AutoUpdate to
begin with.

The MRT is updated the second Tuesday of each month, appears as a
"Critical Update" on the Windows Update site, and runs only when and as
"downloaded." Nothing is actually installed on your computer; there's
nothing to run at a later date; there's nothing to ever uninstall.

Hi,

Maybe not.
Since two months, after I made the automatic download, my XP Pro
System freeezes from time to time.

If I have the chance to look at the task manager ist shows me 99% of
processor time is used by the system.

Because I have several large hard disks with lots of data, the
scanning takes a long time.

How can I stop the removal tool?

I hate rebooting at least one time a day..

hmmm.. the first time I downloaded it something started. You maybe
are right. But my PC freezed because of high processor useage.

After 4 hours I rebooted...

This is often the case when there are Norton-/Symantec products
installed.

This has nothing to do with that tool. Formerly, that tool (MRT.EXE)
has been removed after running. Since the latest update, MRT.EXE
remains in %windir%\system32 but I'm positive that you won't find it
in the task manager.

You are right. What can I do except getting rid of Symantec?
