Malicious Software Removal Tool

Automatic Update ran this tool on my computer. I also know how to run this
tool from the webpage:

Nevertheless, I have a question:

Will WU run periodically the tool on my computer, or do I have to run the
tool myself from time to time?

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove specific,
prevalent malicious software from computers that are running Windows Server 2003,
Windows XP, or Windows 2000


Not intended to be a substitute for your anti virus software.

You'll will have to run the tool yourself.

It runs once and then that's it.

That tool does not actually install from the Windows Update.
It runs, does it's thing and then is gone.
The next month, a revised version of that tool will again come with Windows
Update and do the same thing:

Mike, excuse me for being thick, but I got that from WU a short while back
and it installed fine... once installed it seems to disappear to...where?
Or is it just a temporary file that WU downloads periodically as you say? Is
there anything that I'm supposed to look for and run?

I have one machine it either didn't run on or didn't clean up it's self. The

That tool does not actually install from the Windows Update.

Really? Then why does it install from Windows Updates (as it does, when Updates makes an alert that there are files to download)?

That is why I never install every update from MS. Set your AU to alert you to the downloads, then select the ones you want. I won't use that tool, there are better ones out there.

The Microsoft tool is not a replacement for anything.
Whatever you do to protect is still necessary.
That tool is only designed to pick up the current major threats to Windows
and nothing more.
Because of that, this tool is more benefit to those who do not regularly
maintain their computer.
Those with well maintained computers are less likely to benefit from this
tool.

Is there any particular reason you didn't read the explanation
offered by the Windows Update site?

If that wasn't enough of an explanation for you, you need to read
the KB Article that describes the use of this tool. The MRT is updated
the second Tuesday of each month, appears as a "Critical Update" on the
Windows Update site, and runs only when and as "downloaded." Nothing is
actually installed on your computer; there's nothing to run at a later
date; there's nothing to ever uninstall.
