Making a new field for new contact

Is it possible and if so how to replace one of the exisiting fields in a new
contact with one called "GP Division". Can this be changed so that the new
contact screen has it when I open to create a new contact. Can a phone number
field be changed or used in this way. I want to try to modify a field on the
first screen when creating a new contact if possible for efficiency. I will
then use this field with the address fields for a mail merge.

You cannot create a new phone number property that will appear in the drop-down list of phone numbers, nor can you change the name of any existing property. For basics on customizing contact forms, see:

Thank you Sue. I have now created a new form with the items I wanted,
published it to the contact folder, made the new form the default and
converted the message classes of the existing contacts in the folder. The
resources you steered me towards are excellent and I will play around with
forms some more now.
