Major problems reinstalling XP Home

Problem: when I re-installed a fresh copy of my Win XP Home on my
reformatted hard drive, it asks for some files on the Service Pack 1 CD.
There is no other CD. Service Pack 1a was included on my XP CD. Here are
the details on the Win XP cd I purchased:

NEW SEALED WINDOWS XP Home Edition Full Version

Included Service Pack 1a.This Windows with SP1a will allow you download the
update to SP2 for free.

Brand New Factory Sealed COA!
The software has an authentic and unique registration key code.
The Product Key has NOT been used.

This is a full version, NOT an upgrade. You will have to do a full install.
That means you must install onto a formatted hard drive!
No floppy disk required for boot up, the CD ROM is bootable, all you need to
do is install the CD into the ROM drive and follow the instructions.
This is the Full Windows XP Home OEM Version

As a result (I believe) Windows Update would not work. The internet worked
fine but not Update. Since then, I tried re-installing XP again. NOW IE
doesn't install and the Help section doesn't install. None of this makes
sense (at least to me. I'm used to Win ME).

The extended version of my problem is: I installed my brand new Win XP a
couple of months ago with no problems. Since then I had some data corruption
and had to re-install it. Again, no problem. The other day I installed a
new motherboard/cpu. Windows would not boot for me. I found out that I had
to do a repair in order for XP to work again. During the install, a window
popped up and said I had used up my allotted # of Authentications and I had
to call Microsoft to get a new ID #. I called, they gave me a new (very
long) # which I had to type in.

I was then allowed to proceed with the install. During the install Windows
said it needed some files from the Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD. I do not
have such a cd as it is supposedly included on the one I bought. I did not
know what to do so I said cancel. The install continued without any other
problems. When I started up Windows and went to Update, it wouldn't work.
The internet connection worked but it kept saying there was an error in
Windows Update.

I could not figure out what to do so I reformated my hard drive and
reinstalled XP from scratch. Well, the same request came up and I did the
same thing. Now Internet explorer is not installed, the Help/Support
selection is not accessible, etc. How do I get around this problem??????

Ok, here's another piece of info. When the install program asks for files
from the Win XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD, it says "copy files from:
D:\i386" It is looking for licwmi. This file is located in the folder i386
(I checked) so maybe for some reason it is not reading the cd?

1. Reformat the HDD with another utility - the one that came with the hard
drive, for ex. XP over XP still finds information about the previous
installation. Better yet, use some utility to 'wipe' the drive clean -
writing 0's.

That looks a probable reason. There is a Microsoft contact number for
replacing lost and damaged CDs - and it looks like that is what you
have. Do a Google groups search on this group for messages on that
point

So what happens if you put your Windows XP cd back into the cd-rom drive? My
XP disk also includes Service Pack 1. When I installed XP and it asked for the
Service Pack 1 disk I simply put the Windows XP disk back into the cd-rom drive
and clicked ok or next or whatever.
