continue...And finally it takes 5-10 min to shutdown...What now?...I'm ready

Open up My Computer and right click on your C: drive. Select Properties. On
the Tools tab, click on the first button (it should say Check Now). Next,
check the box that says "Automatically fix file system errors." Make sure
you reboot your computer after that. After that, defragment your computer.
You can get to that by going Start > All Programs > Accessories> System
Tools > Disk Defragmenter. Also, make sure you have an anti-virus program
and firewall and that they are up to date. Simple steps such as these will
keep you from having a panic attack.

Thanks so much...I have always kept my antivirus and firewall up to
date...The system is constantly maintained...I'm not sure what happened but
thanks so much again...GG

For the record, I am peeved at Microsoft for making Chkdsk hard to find for
the common user. If it were in the start menu, so many more people would
know about this NT utility, and it could help them greatly.

Agreed...I used chkdsk many years ago but was unaware of it's location...GG

Gary, I have the same problem. My outlook stopped receiving and it takes
anywhere from 5-10 minutes to shut down. 4-5mins hanging on my desktop and
4-5mins logging off. I tried heeroyuy suggestions but it hasn't helped. Did
you manage to sort it out and if so how? Also if I disable norton internet
security I can get my emails. Are you running nortons?
