The major utilities that you will need to help with your XP is:
1) A good, up to date anti-virus utility (not an on-line
service)
2) A good spyware removal tool -- clean off nasty programs which
can take control of your system and/or
tell
advertisers when you surf on the web.
3) A good pop-up ad blocker.
There are other utility suite which give you more programs to help. System
Mechanic is one as is Norton SystemWorks .
Use the provided defragmenter (though there are better third party ones)
and the Disk Clean up facility at Start - All Programs - Accessories -
System Tools - DiskCleanup. When I run that and the system is in a
good state, so I know I will not want to restore to an earlier time, I
take the opportunity to use the More Options and delete all but the last
restore point.
Be suspicious of third party packages that claim to make things better.
Especially have nothing to do with ones that claim to 'manage' or 'free
up' Memory. Those give an appearance of better figures but in fact have
done nothing positive, and may well result in run away use of page file
