Usually we'll look at the Event Viewer. That is gold when it comes to
errors.
Make sure you are only using your internal DNS and not your ISP's or
router's DNS.
Also you can run netdiag /v and dcdiag /v. They're great tools (from WIndows
Support Tools on your cdrom).
Nsllookup can be used to verify DNS records, besides just physically looking
in the zone.
