Mail Folder compression???

X

xytsrm

Periodically a message pops-up asking if I want to compress a mail folder to
save space, and it references one of my Outlook Express folders.

I haven't found any Outlook Express option that addresses this (as it only
seems to reference OE folders), nor have I found any general XP setting to
reference this function.

How do I turn it off?

Thanks, X

You don't turn it off. Read the following, but post back if you are running
SP3, and you either do not use OE, or you compact and still see the prompt.

Why does OE insist on compacting folders when I close it?:

About File Corruption:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

Compacting your folders periodically is a must to keep OE functioning well
and at some point, you may lose all your saved messages if you don't. When
you delete, or move messages, the space they had used remains until you
compact.

***Never touch anything until the compacting is finished.***

See:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

With SP2, automatic background compacting was removed due to problems it
caused. Now you will get a prompt to compact after 100 OE closings, which
you should do, and don't touch anything until it has finished. If you
compact manually, at your convenience, this will also set the counter back
to zero. See this for more information:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact

If you are fully patched, you will also now see a copy of your dbx files
being copied to the Recycle Bin as BAK files. Should something go awry when
compacting, the messages can easily be restored from this backup. A manual
compact will also reset the counter in the registry back to zero now.

For more info, see the information outlined in red here:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2

To keep things running smooth, and for faster compacting:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt and you may lose mail. Create your own user defined folders for
storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder
regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as
empty as is feasible.

And backup often.

Assuming you're running WinXP SP2 or SP3, it can't be turned off nor should
you do so.

The Automatic Compact prompt should only rear its head every 100 times you
close OE...unless you've manually compacted all folders, in which case the
"CompactCount" is reset to 0 [zero].

NB: A very small minority of those running WinXP SP3 have found that
Automatic Compact prompt to pop-up repeatedly despite having compacted all
folders manually. If this is what's happening to you, tell us in a reply to
this post.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:

Perhaps by asking in a group with OE in the title?

Ask elsewhere

As our resident ****wit knows only too well, Outlook Express is part of
Windows XP. He just won't admit it because a 13 year old is never wrong.

Turning it off is inviting disaster. Go to the outlook express (not
outlook; outlook express) group and ask there. You MUST allow OE to
compact folders or it's going to topple on you eventually and you will
lose all emails and possibly the address book too. I hope you're doing
backups if they're important to you. AFAIK it's pretty difficult to
turn it off. Again, see the right newsgroup.

Go to the outlook express group and ask there.
