mail delivery failure

This keeps happening. Let me note that I never have missed paying a bill to
Comcast. Why do people keep getting the messages they write to me back
again? Here is what the most recent one said ...

"Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.

< my email address>:
Mail server for "comcast.net" unreachable for too long"

I collect my email numerous times a day. Is there something I can do to
receive email again? I do get some email but many times people are getting
them back again.

It could be this their email providers think that too many spammers are
Comcast users, and have therefore blocked access to Comcast
without adjusting their error messages to say why. You might want
to ask Comcast if they are on any of the lists of internet providers
that spammers tend to use.

Also, Comcast may have changed their setup instructions without
telling you, so you may want to check:

These instructions were written for Outlook Express, but should
also work under Windows Mail if you avoid the One Click Fix
and the instructions don't call for the HTTP protocol.

Thank you. I did some changes to the spam filter. It's a matter of time
now to see if this helped.

I did check out the email setup for the server port numbers. They are
current. We had made those changes at another point. So that couldn't have
been the problem.

At one point it was a person from a Comcast email address emailing to us at
another Comcast email address and THAT wasn't getting through. Any other
suggestions?

For that last problem, you may have to ask Comcast for help
 
Sounds like Comcast's mail server was temporarily unavailable.
It has nothing to do with your particular account.
You may want to check with a Comcast-specific forum to see if
other Comcast customers are experiencing this problem:

In the long run, you may want to think about switching to a more reliable
email provider. For example, you could keep your Comcast internet
connection but use Gmail for email service.
 
I don't know much about Gmail. Is it less cumbersome for email composing
than Hotmail is?

Hmmm, does the same apply to Hotmail? I can receive it in my Windows Mail?
And send email to appear as it is from the hotmail address even though
collected and written through Windows Mail? Are there any reasons to chose
gmail over hotmail?

If I install this Live Mail and don't like it can I get Windows Mail back?
Sounds like I am in the minority here but I like Windows Mail. In fact I
don't see much difference in it than Outlook Express, except for the
contacts.

Installing Windows Live Mail hides Windows Mail, but does not
remove it. You can even run both of them for a while before you
decide which one you want.
 
Absolutely. If you don't like WLM, merely uninstall it, and WM will
be back as your default email program. You can even run both at the
same time if you want.

Tools | Accounts
Select the Comcast account and click Properties.
On the Advanced tab uncheck the option to leave a copy on the server.
 
Not sure why this advice. I want to receive email on both my laptop and
desktop. There are not a bunch of built up messages on the server. I only
have it set to leave a copy on the server for the one machine.

How would unchecking this option stop my email from being sent back to a
person? Besides I have only opted to leave a copy on the server for the
past 2 weeks and this has been a problem off and on for months now.

It depends on what the server's limit on messages for you is, and how many
you get. Setting it to wait a reasonable time, then delete them from the
server works for most people.

Currently there is no email there. I have it set to delete them after 5
days. How large will an email have to be to start blocking other messages?
For instance if someone should send me a 10 MB email will that keep me from
getting messages from others? That's just an example, of course.

I think we are going up a wrong alley here.
You said before that your correspondents sometimes get a non-
delivery notice saying "Mail server for comcast.net unreachable
for too long." If you had left too many messages on the server,
the non-delivery report would say something like "Recipient
mailbox over quota."
