I downloaded and installed the Magnifier Powertoy, however I can't find
it. Is it the same with the Magnifier in the Start/All
Programs/Accessories/Accessibility menu (in which case I just
reinstalled it...)?

From the ReadMe file:

Taskbar Magnifier

Allows you to magnify part of the screen from the taskbar. This is very
similar to Magnifier that can be found under the Accessories menu on the
Start Menu except that this PowerToy remains in the taskbar and has a
smaller viewing area. Right click on the taskbar, click toolbars, and then
click "Taskbar Magnifier."

It adds a deskband named "Taskbar Magnifier"
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mag.dll

Thanks! That's nice, but is there any way to make the word "Magnifier"
next to the viewing area to disappear? It takes too much real estate...

Yes. But takes a registry edit to do so.

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B48A93BC-5E8D-472B-8FE2-E53302C4548C}

Backup the key by exporting to a file.

In the right pane, change the existing data for the (default) value.

Actually the solution was simpler: right-clicking on it I was given the
option to hide to unselect Show Title. That's much better

Yes. But that hides it but does not rename.
Anyway, if that solves your purpose it's fine.
