i have a computer running office 2000 SR-1. when i open a
particular excel workbook on the network that was created
in Excel 2002 SR-2, i get 2 pop up windows...one about
macros to enable or disable, and one about links to
another workbook and to update or not. the find->links
function in excel 2000 points out what workbork the link
is to, but the excel 2002 computer shows no links. how can
i get the excel 2000 machine to be able to view this
workbook without the annoying macros and links messages? i
have tried to update the excel 2000 machine with the SR-3
update, but it asks me for a file called DATA1.MSI on the
CD, which when i try to install, says i can't because it
is already on the computer. so, basically, i am unable to
get the latest updates for office 2000.

Maybe there's a difference in settings for the macro stuff:

Tools|Macro|Security|Security Level.

High means don't ask about macros (and never run them)
medium means always ask and do what you say
low means don't ask, but run them whenever they need to be run.

It sounds like xl2k had this setting on low. (Read that MS warning on that
dialog page before you set it to low.)

And there's a setting for links in both xl2k and xl2002, too.

Tools|Options|Edit Tab
Ask to update automatic links.

If that's checked, then the links are updated without prompts.

I was kind of confused about your link question. Do you think that there should
be no links and there are some--or there should be some and there aren't.

In either case, Bill Manville has a very nice addin that can help find those
pesky links.

thanks dave!

i will try these suggestions out. as for the links
problem...the links are not supposed to be there, but they
show up on the computer running the earlier version of
office. i will try the automatic update option to see if
that works. thanks for taking the time to offer solutions.
