Macros always available in Personal.xls?

I've read in numerous posts about saving macros in personal.xls but it
appears personal.xls must be open before other workbooks can 'see' the
macros? Is this true? If not why can't I see the macros? TIA

You may have to make sure the macros are public. When you go to Tools >
Macros > Macros (or hit ALT+F8), only public macros (ones not starting with
Private or have a top line that reads Option Private Module) will display.

If you call the macros in personal.xls by using alt-f8 (tools|macro|macros),
then the personal.xls has to be open.

Most people store their personal.xls in their XLStart folder so that it opens
each time excel is started. And most people make sure that personal.xls is
hidden so it doesn't get in the way.

Personal.xls open as a hidden workbook and theres's no need to open it as
visible. call macros in it like this. Works from any workbook

Application.Run "Personal.xls!mysub"

When would PERSONAL be visible? The only way I know to create a PERSONAL.xls
is by recording a macro in it.

In xl2003 menus, you can show those hidden windows via:

Window|Unhide

If you save personal.xls with the window showing, then it'll be visible the next
time you open it.

One reason macros may not be available is if you open new sheets in
seperate instances of excel.

But if you open personal.xls in readonly mode, the macros should be available to
run.

If you make changes to the personal.xls that's opened in readonly mode, it can
become a mess, though.
