I got quite a scare this morning. I have a 2-week old Dell {XPS710, WinXP
Pro, Raid 1}. When I attempted to boot-up this morning, I was greeted with
a blue screen entitled 'Machine_Check_Exception.' This, I've never
encountered before.

The screen told me to reboot IF this was a 'first-time' happening.

The codes/numbers displayed: 0x0000009c; 0x00000000; 0xBA34C050;
0xB2000040; 0x00000800 {I could be off one '0' there somewhere}.

I shut-down, changed UPS {also had a 2-week old UPS}. I rebooted, and it
essentially re-booted OK, I shut-down again, and it rebooted totally
normal.

What most likely happened? Do the above codes tell us any particular
thing? What are the chances my PC 'got hurt'?

I'm totally in the dark here.

Thanks - james

A machine_check_exception is a cpu problem. The machine is still under
warranty. Why not ask Dell?
My guess is that a bit got stuck on somewhere (or off) when it was supposed
to be in the other state. Hence, the cpu generated the exception.

Take a look at this link for some basic info. It's not going to help you
much but gives you some information.

0x0000009C: MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION

At this point just watch and wait to see if a problem develops.

If the computer is working now, then the problem was probably just a
minor hiccup. But if one is interested in decoding the Machine Exception
error, then start by downloading the Intel IA-32 Software Developer's
Manual. Go to Chapter 13 and start reading. The code numbers will reveal
the type and location of the cause of the problem. Have fun!

Ghostrider, could you please direct me to a source from where I can
download the manual you specified? I went 'Googling' - and came up with a
slew.

Example: Intel® 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer's Manual
Volume 2A: Instruction Set Reference, A-M

There's several Volumes one must choose from. Maybe I'm looking in the
wrong place.

I just spent the better part of 3-hours on the phone will Dell Support -
while they guided me through lengthy 'diagnostic procedures.' Found nothing
amiss.

Thanks, James {I would like to be able to make sense of those codes}

IIRC, GRider is probably referencing Volume 3 of the Intel Architecture
System Developer's Manual. It can probably be downloaded from the Intel
Support site, viz., http://support.intel.com/.
