Machine pauses when opening local folders whilst connected to network

Hi!

I have a couple of Win 2000 machines that are pausing for 30 seconds
when you try to open a folder on the desktop, or open windows explorer.
If I pull the network cable out, it loads instantly.

I've made a few observations and tried numerous things, here is a brief
rundown:

* CPU usage doesn't go up during the pauses, System Idle process
stays at 99%
* HDD activity doesn't increase during the pauses
* Machine is 2000 Pro SP4 with latest patches, running Symantec AV
* Disabling the AV services doesn't affect the pauses
* Indexing service has been disabled, and removed the indexing flag
from the disk and subfolders
* I have removed the scheduled tasks on folders registry setting
* If I disable NerBIOS over TCP/IP I can no longer browse the network
(thinking DNS issue)
* Machine is part of a 2000 Active directory domain
* All mapped drives and printers are connected and available
* I have set the folder view back to defaults, and using classic
view, not web view
* I have performed a Repair on the machine
* The machine is a P4 with 512MB of RAM
* The user DOES have a roaming profile

I'm off to go and try a few more things (checking DNS and creating a
non roaming profile to test further).

But this really has me stumped, can anyone else shed some light on it
for me?

Thanks in Advance,
Adrian

Sounds DNS related, I would think it's trying to resolve some network link
somewhere.

Don't forget you can add entries to the HOSTS file if required.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265396/ althoug your SP 4 dismisses that

Hi Steve.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look at my problem. I did discover
a problem with the reverse lookup zone on the 2000 server, I corrected
this, restarted the DNS Server service and the problem was still there.

I created a new domain user without roaming profiles, and the problem
still exists.

The problem isn't accessing files or folders off any networks shares,
but off the local disk. However the problem goes away if the network
cable is pulled.

Thanks again,
Adrian
