different file extensions, so dlls wouldnt work, but is there a .net
framework for a mac? and if not how can i run a .net app on a mac? thanks

No, Microsoft doesn't offer a complete, supported .NET Framework for the
Mac.

In theory .net is platform independent. But as with everything MS does,
using it ties you to their environment.
You might want to searhc the open source web sites - I know there is a
project, maybe completed, that was developing a .net like tool for
linux. Maybe there's one for mac, or if you're using a new mac that
runs unix, the linux one might work.

iwdu15,

You might look into the open source Mono project.
