Mac, Fonts and Powerpoint

I'm working on a PPT file on a Mac. It was started by another designer
and I finished formatting it using Arial. When I save and close the
file, then open it back up it doesn't save my formatting changes. It
reverts to the old Times Roman font. The file is 40 pages long and it
happens in about 20 of the pages. There's only one master page and the
pages this happens on don't really follow the master. Could that be the
reason it's happening? Is there a way to fix this? Do I have to rebuild
from scratch?

I don't know if this option is available in MAC version but have you clicked
on Format, Replace Fonts and replaced the Times Roman with Arial?
