M4a convertor

A friend of mine is going to give me some music discs with M4a files on it. I know I'll be able to play them on my PC, but I'm assuming (?) they will not play on my stand alone MP3 player. So the question is, any freeware out there to convert them to MP3?
TIA

see http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=m4a

Files in .M4A format are actually the audio layer of (non-video) MPEG 4
movies. M4A is slated to become the new standard for audio file
compression. This format is also known as Apple Lossless, Apple Lossless
Encoder, or ALE. It is a new codec designed to provide lossless encoding
in less storage space.

Various programs use this extension; too many to list individually. Take
clues from the location of the file as a possible pointer to exactly
which program is producing the file. The file's date and time can also
help if you know which programs you were running when the file was
written.

dbpoweramp will convert them- if you want them converted to mp3 use the
older version of dbpowweramp

Most music players- I use winamp- will play without conversion

But will they play on my stand alone Mp3 player? I think not, that's why I need a converter.
