My system (xp home) is periodicaly slowing down to the point of freezing. I opened task manger and noticed that the cpu was running at 100% and lsass.exe was using between 60-70% of the cpu. I scaned for the sasser virus and came up clean. Ran a virus check and ad-aware software...nothing. Any idea what's causing this and how I can stop it? Thanks.

lsass.exe is Windows Local Security Authority Server Process handles Windows
security mechanisms. It verifies the validity of user logons to your
computer or server. Technically, the software generates the process that is
responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service.

what happens when you end task it ?

To clarify my perdiciment: my system isn't shutting down. my system will lockup for 30sec to 1min while lsass.exe uses 60-70% of my cpu. then back to normal. I have win update MS04-011 installed and on the link provided I checked for the sasser worm and came up clean. Should I still jump threw the hoops to remove sasser or do I have some other problem? Thanks...Abe
