lsass.exe and status code 1073741819

I can not logon to Windows XP SP2 in any mode. At the logon stage of boot-up
I get a "system shutdown" (in 60 seconds) message initiated by either "\" or
"NT Authority\system" depending on which mode I am trying to logon with.
Both messages also have the status code 1073741819 and indicate Lsass.exe had
the problem. I have pulled the harddrive from the computer and installed it
in another computer (as a second harddrive) and scanned it with several
programs including Spybot, Microsoft Removal tool, Norton, and Trendmicro.
Ad-Aware freezes up part of the way through it, so I scanned it in sections
with Ad-Aware. Nothing was found. I have searched the internet for
information, but none that I saw had the situation of getting the "system
shutdown" notice at every logon mode. None of the free fix programs would
work because they only scan the boot harddrive.

The whole problem started while the computer was in Screen Saver mode and a
message about indicating which drive to us and then press any key (as in a
boot up screen) appeared.

Does anyone have any ideas for saving this installation, or am I looking at
a complete re-install? (Only today am I able to boot from the installation
disk, and, of course, the Recovery Console requires logging onto Windows,
which then produces the "system shutdown" messages.)

Thanks in advance...

I got it fixed (I think). I used the Windows XP installation CD and did a
"repair of an existing installation".

(Sorry of the multiple posts...)
