lower case letter i not always accepted

I have an Excel 2000 application and have run into a problem where a text
entry for the lower case letter "i" is converted to an upper case letter
when it is entered as a single character in a cell or as part of a series
such as A20-g, A20-h, A20-i , etc.

All the letters with the exception of the letter "i" stay in lower case as
typed, but the "i" always reverts to a capital letter. I tried the same
individual letters and series in Word 2000 and encountered the same behavior.
Is the lower case "i" a special character that is not allowed to be lower
case for certain situations, or is this a bug? Any suggestions as to a
workaround would be helpful

It is probably a spelling correction.

Tools > Options... > Spelling > AutoCorrect Options...
then check/fix the replacement dictionary

Thanks "Gary"s Student", that is exactly what was causing the problem. I
hadn't even considered something as simple as and auto-replace feature being
the cause. I had considered that there was some special formula criteria
that might have been restricting the use, but not the case. It's is another
aspect of the application to keep in mind for the future.
