Low System Resources

G

Greg

Hi,

I have WindowsXP SP2 installed. The OS is on drive C: which is 40G. I have
used about 15G (last time I checked). This morning I got a low system
resources notification icon. When invenstigating much to my dismay I
noticed that my C:\ drive only has 26M free space remaining.

I tried runing disk cleanup with no effect.

Next I decided to run CHKDSK. The system started and run up to the CHKDSK
is verifying file data (stage 4 of 5) ... 78 percent complete and then sat
at that point for about 15 minutes. CHKDSK finally completed and reported
the volume clean. The computer restarted but the C:\ drive is still full.

Next I scan for viruses and none where found.

Next I ran defrag. No joy.

Where do I go from here?

Thank you

Option 3 below will bring immediate relief but don't forget the Search
Option in Windows Explorer can be set to find large files. You should be
able to find out what has been added to make such a large difference.

Regular and effective housekeeping is essential. What you do and how
often you do it will depend
on how you use your computer. A suggested routine may include:
1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.
2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.
3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup with
Temporary Internet Files, Offline Web Pages (optional), System Restore
( more Options tab )
and Recycle Bin selected for deletion. If you have more than one drive /
partition you may
need to do this operation for each drive / partition.
4. Remove Cookies. Start, Control Panel, Internet Options, General,
Delete Cookies.
5. Run Disk Defragmenter.

~~~~~~
Hope this helps.
The Outlook Express you are posting with is not the OE that comes with the
SP2 installation. Open IE and copy this to the Address Bar:
javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion
Copy and paste the entire result into a reply in this thread.
