No help here for that. You gotta go out and buy XP Pro. I would recommend
getting an OEM version to save money.

Sony is 100% responsible for their OEM version of Windows XP.
If, for whatever reason, they can supply you with a Restore CD,
your only option is to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP
Professional at your own expense.

Example:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Service Pack 2 -OEM

I think Sony uses a hidden partition to restore the computer.
Check your manual and/or the Sony website for your model for details.

If you are still in warranty, try calling Sony again a second opinion may
benefit you.
Microsoft can not help with OEM CD replacement.

Otherwise your only option may be to buy Windows XP or whatever operating
system you desire..

The restore or recovery is on a hidden partition. If you use the Sony
recovery, it will wipe your hard drive of all its data and programs
and restore it to factory spec. Also, Sony includes a program that
will create recovery disks for you. Have you used it or are you even
aware that it exists? Read your Sony computer manual for details.

If you have the Product Key can you still get a replacement for a
reduced price? I remember getting a replacement Office 2000 CD which
shattered in the CD drive for a fraction of the full price.

I thought that Sony, to be an OEM, has to provide at least a
"Recovery Disk" to users that restores their machine to original
state as shipped from factory?

Stan;
OEMs have to provide a restore method.
More and more are choosing to do that with a partition on the hard drive.
They will probably continue to do so as long as their customers accept the
practice.

Another could reason for white boxes.

And when switching a purchase, the details as to why should be sent to at
least two places:
1. Sales rep-so it is known exactly why a sales commission was lost and
possibly grumbling from sales staff may add to the impact
Phone is good enough here.
2. Written letter on paper to the management...the bean counters may
eventually get the message.
Email is easily lost, but used in addition to letter can not hurt.

Commenting and complaining here is one thing but most OEMs will never get
the message if that is all that is done.

If there are enough grumbles here and the word spreads eventually the
resultant loss of a good reputation will become known to the management.

Gerry;
That is true.
My point was this may be an OK place to start, but if it does not also go to
the source, it is mostly a waste of time and nothing more than letting off
steam.
