The "desktop" icon, that I use all the time when I have a lot of difference
programs running, gets me back to the desktop with all it's icons. For some
reason it vanished from the lower tool bar it inhabits. Would someone
please tell me how to get this back.

Thanks, John

You must be referring to the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch toolbar.
Do a search for a file called "Show Desktop" and (hopefully) find extra ones
under Default User or another user. Shift-Drag the icon from the Search
results window to the Quick Launch Toolbar. Once it's there, you can find it
under the user name, such as
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Quick Launch
Be sure to drag the "Show Desktop" icon, not the same icon labeled "Desktop
(create shortcut)" or any other name.

Thanks, that fixed the problem...still don't know why it disappeared.

Think you are referring to the Quick Launch Toobar. Not sure though. Right
click the Taskbar. That's theingie between the Start button and the clock.
Choose Toolbars, and click on Quick Launch.
You can add shortcuts to this toolbar by creating a shortcut on teh desktop
and dragging it onto the quick launch toolbar.

good trading,
