I downloaded a small program from a website that backsup your game profile.
The next day I find that I cannot run my windows xp past the login spot for
my name. It tries to load my profile and continue into the windows setup but
goes right back to my name and shows that I can turn off the computer by
clicking on the lower left icon. Not being able to solve this problem I
decided I would try and reformat the hard drive and rid myself of this
problem. Well when I try to boot from the xp cd the computer hangs on the
blue window showing the window config with the lines below it. A couple of
times I have been able to reach the restore and repair window and rather than
reformat I tried to repair which did not correct anything. All I want to do
is reformat the hard drive, install the xp again and the basic programs for
virus protection and things like spybot. I've reformatted computer several
times over the years with no problem but this one has me stumped. I have a
feeling that I somehow corrupted my registry files somehow and this may be
affecting things. This xp was the sp2 but I can't be sure that this past
week I didn't download the sp3. At the time this was happening I did a
spybot search and did notice that when I corrected the spy bot results I did
get registry warnings about my corrections. Having used spybot also for
years I've never had a problem with the corrections. All I want to do is
reformat this hard drive and re-install the xp system, plus hopefully learn
something from this experience.

thanks for your help and time.

Hi,

Your original problem sounds like your profile has been messed up which is
actually quite common, logging in as an administrator and backing up any
files in your profile c:\documents and
settings\%Username%\ (username being your login name) once you are happy
that all your files are backed up, delete the faulty profile folder. When
you log back in with your old username windows will create a new profile.

Hope this helps.

Your original problem was most likely caused by the system being unable to
locate the file userinit.exe - see here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;249321&x=10&y=10. There are
several methods to fix this problem within a few minutes, without taking
drastic measures such as formatting the disk. It is probably too late to try
these methods on your machine because you appear to have taken quite a few
irreversible steps.

You write "Well when I try to boot from the xp cd the computer hangs on the
blue window showing the window config with the lines below it. A couple of
times I have been able to reach the restore and repair window . . ." I don't
know what "blue window" you're referring to or what the "restore and repair
window might be but I suspect that you did not set your BIOS to use the CD
drive as the primary boot device. In other words, you probably did not boot
from the CD.

If you feel that you did and if you really cannot get to the initial setup
screen that lets you repartition and reformat your disk then you can use
this sledge-hammer approach:
1. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot diskette from www.bootdisk.com.
2. Run delpart.exe from http://www.russelltexas.com/delpart.htm to delete
all existing partitions.
3. Boot the machine with your WinXP installation CD.
4. Load Windows.

I note that you have reloaded Windows several times in the past. This sounds
like a big waste of time. It would be far more effective to load Windows and
all applications, then take a snapshot with an imaging program such as
Acronis TrueImage. Later on, when you have another accident, you simply
restore that snapshot.
