The folder that contained my Windows XP Home Edition was
destroyed by water. I purchased it about a year ago and
have yet to install it on my laptop. What can I do about
a lost product ID? I know this is a legit copy but the
disk is the only thing to survive the water.

If it was a retail copy and you have proof of purchase see this link:

If OEM contact the vendor you got it from.

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer; although very few manufacturers/vendors keep records of
the Product Keys they've sold, it's worth a try before you have to buy
a new license.
