Greetings,
Sure hope someone in this group can solve this problem. My friend has a
Dell desktop with XP home/sp2. The adm. account is password protected and
the password is lost. Can still use the guest account. They have the
recovery disk. If someone can tell me how to wipe the HD clean then we can
reinstall to original state. Please help.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance,

First off, it takes a lot of work to password protect the built-in Administrator
account in XP Home Edition. If the account that you're having the problem with
is your friend's regular account, see if the following helps.

Restart the computer and keep hitting the F8 key until you see the Windows
Advanced Options menu. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and hit Enter. At
the Welcome screen, log on with the built-in Administrator account. Once you're
logged on to this account you can go into Control Panel -> User Accounts and
remove the password from the problem account.

If your still locked out of the computer, take a look at this web site.

If you're still locked out of your computer, take a look here.

Good luck

Thanks in advance,

You don't need to reinstall to fix this, as there are plenty of utilities
and Linux-based boot disks that will clear the passwords.

However, the reinstall should wipe the drive and a recovery CD should create
a new, admin level user account.
