I've just received a computer which I've been asked to speed up and clear out.

so far I've done a fantastic job; loads up login screen within 40 seconds,
compared to the previous FIVE MINS!

It's a Dell Dimension 8300.

When deleting their previous internet dial up connections, they managed to
delete their LAN aswell.

Is there any way that I can ADD it again?

PLEASE HELP

thankyou

Open the Network Connections folder. If the Local Area Connection is
disabled, click it and enable it.

If the Local Area Connection doesn't appear in the Network Connections
folder, go to Device Manager and uninstall the Ethernet network
adapter. Then click Action > "Scan for hardware changes" to reinstall
it.

Did you do an in-place reinstallation of Windows XP from CD? If so,
you also have to reinstall Service Pack 2.

Did you disable any network services?

Thankyou for your help, I've now solved the problem!

I did reinstall service pack 2, and all the gubbings to go with it, however
the ethernet NIC, didn't come with a seperate CD as it's part of the
motherboard.

The user of the machine had lost all their disks, so I had to install
windows using a generic disc, and used the Windows ID from the sticker on the
side. (Had to ring Microsoft and convince them that I was reinstalling the
same machine, and not on another!

On another machine I went onto dell's site and got all the drivers that it
said it should have.. The NIC all were BROADCOM software patches etc.

None of these worked.

The Dell's site said that it was a BROADCOM NIC, however, I found a forum in
which someone said that they had an Intell Network card NOT a Broadcom, in
their Dimension 8300 machine.

I went onto the appropriate site, downloaded the drive, transferred using
USB FlashMemory Drive and it found it instantly!

Thankyou for you help all the same.

I'd already tried you advice, and that's why I was posting :)
