Lost my 'Internet' tray icon

Compared with the other consequences of my SP2 installation, this
one's pretty trivial, but I'd lile to fix it all the same. The little
flashing icon that indicates when the connection is active has gone.
Anyone know where it comes from, and how to get it back please?

It may or not be related to the fact that my Control Panel>Network
Connections folder now comes up totally empty. I used to have lots of
DUN connections in there (from my Before Broadband era), and built-in
things like Add New Connection, Network Wizard, etc. All now gone.
 
Other problems emerged, plus general instability. I decided to revert
to SP1, which appears to be running OK again.
