I reinstalled Windows XP on my Dell Dimension 4600 and now I am unable to
find/use/instal Microsoft Word and Excel.

I found the setup files in 'Program files', but when I try to reinstall them
an error message comes up saying I need to put in the Microsoft Word CD.
What?! I have no CD. All I have is the reinstallation CD for XP.

Any suggestions?

Where did you get Word and Excel in the first place? That's where you need
to go for reinstallation help.

Those as well as other Office products are not and never have been a part of
Windows.

You need to install them separately.

If you bought MS Office (Word and Excel) from Dell, they sent the disks
along with your other software disks.
If you bought MS Office from some one else, they gave you the disks.
Word and Excel were never part of Windows.
You have to find those disks and reinstall the Word and Excel programs.
If you got them from a friend, you are SOL and will have to buy a new set of
disks.

Just as the prompt says, you'll need to reinstall the applications from
the same installation CD(s) from which they were initally installed.
Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows operating
system. They are, and always have been, separate applications, that
must be purchased and installed separately. If you've lost the CD(s):

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's
manufacturer.

To clarify: Microsoft Office was factory installed on my computer when I
purchased it. Recently, I reinstalled Windows XP. Since reinstalling Windows
XP, Microsoft Office no longer works. I realize Microsoft Office is not a
part of Windows XP. The only reason I mentioned Windows XP is because
Microsoft Office only stopped working AFTER I reinstalled Windows XP. No
Microsoft Office installation CDs accompanied my computer when I purchased it.

I spoke to technical support 3 times and got 3 different responses.
1. The first person told me he would send me the CDs to reinstall Microsoft
Office. He then said, "I will have to call you back in 10 minutes to verify
your account information to send them to you." He never called back. Imagine
that.
2. Next person said, "You have to purchase them and download them yourself."
I told him of the first call and his response was, "I have no record of that
phone call." Another huge surprise.
3. Third person told me, "No problem, go to www.support.dell.com and
download what you need. Did that - nothing related to Microsoft Office was
located. Now I am just mad.

!3 maybe correct, but Dell is your only source if you need the CDs and do
not already have them and do not want to spend your $.
Check all your CDs carefully to be sure you do not have Office.
#2 is correct in that you can purchase Office.
Office is not available for you to download anywhere so the tech (#3) was
either ignorant or misunderstood.
