Lost Messages in Outlook Express 6

When starting up outlook express 6 my inbox is empty
however at previous logoff had 17 entries. This problem
has effected other sub folders at what appears to be
random times, leaving me unable to recover stored
messages.
I am using Win 2000 SP4 and am upto date with all updates.
Any ideas.

Go to Tools/Options/Maintenance, if "Compact messages in
the background" is checked, that's what caused your problem.
Disable it. The option has been causing random data loss in
OE for years now and MS refuses to address the issue.

As for getting your Inbox messages back, forget it. They're
history.
