Lost ip address

I posted this on the performance and maintenance site, but as I haven't yet received a response, thought I'd try here. ( I'm using my work computer as I'm unable to access the internet at home.)

I recently got started with broadband for my internet service. I installed a new network card. I had McAfee Firewall installed, Norton Anti-virus in addition to using a router as additional protection and the IE firewall protection. I only download from "legitimate" sites, my training provider, SmartForce; PCWorld and PCMag recommended utility sites. I use Spybot, AdAware and additionally added Spywatcher. I also download updates from Microsoft and most recently downloaded the SQL Beta Express, Visual Basic, etc as those are things I want to learn more about. I don't open email attachments.

Recently my NAV 2004 became corrupted, McAfee stopped being enabled when I started up my computer. And I stopped being able to connect to my broadband provider. When I enter ipconfig, my ip address shows as 0.0.0.0, and when I try to renew, the message says I'm unable to renew because a file is missing. Below are the steps I've taken.

1. Uninstalled all the SQL, Visual Basic Beta's I downloaded from Microsoft.

2. After talking to Linksys, who thought it was an IRQ conflict or a problem with my PCI slot, I checked resources, hardware - no conflicts and my NIC was working properly in addition to showing up on my network connections.

3. Spoke with my broadband provider. They were unable to force renewal, so thought it was a problem with the NIC.

4. I swapped the NIC with another Linksys NIC I have - same PCI slot. Same problem.

5. I haven't yet tried a different PCI slot, but I was under the assumption that if the there were no warnings showing in device manager, everything was ok.

This morning I ran ipconfig again. This was with the cable modem connected directly to the NIC without the router. Here's the message I got:

Media State: Media disconnected

Tunnel Adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-interface:
Connection Specific DNS suffix:
IP address: :fe80::5445:5245:444fx4
Default Gateway:

I wasn't sure whether to go to the Networking group or the Security group and as I can't get online at this point I can't get my computer checked out at PCPitstop (another resource I've recently begun using). I thought it might be a performance issue as I have been getting several BSOD's with 08e, 050 and 0c2 errors, different files are referenced, particularly tspip.sys, win32k.sys, and most recently sysaudiosys. Sometimes there are no devices or system files indicated. And occasionally the system just freezes, or slows down to a great degree.

Yet, all my hardware devices appear to working properly and are up to date.

I hope this isn't too long for this newsgroup, but any help would certainly be appreciated.

Initially what file did it say was missing when you ran
Ipconfig? Did you remove and re-install all networking
components?

No file was mentioned, it just said a file was missing. I didn't uninstall and reinstall all network components. I did uninstall and reinstall the Linksys driver.

Try removing TCP/IP and then re-adding it and see if that
helps the situation.

In my experience, the more software you installed the more problems it
creates down the road. In my opinion, you have two many anti-spyware and
firewalls installed.

You said you have a rounter on your network right? If this router is for
your broadband? if so then you do not need to install any firewall software
on your system because most broadband routers has built-in firewall already.
If you afraid of internal hack, you can enable your the built-in firewall in
WindowsXP.

I'm not sure what the problem might be but i would recommend you uninstall
all your protection software (except for virusscanner). reinstall TCP/IP
component. make sure your network does give out IP address with another
computer. Or you can set your system to use Static IP.

let me know.

Have a look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357

The article is pretty long but its actually pretty simple.

Basically just go to Start ---> Run and type netsh int ip reset
c:\resetlog.txt

You can then look in the file c:\resetlog.txt for the results (kind of
boring useless info, but it lets you know that the command did something.)

It should reset the TCP/IP settings to the default. Hopefully that will fix
the problem...
