Lost & Found files mystery.

Ok all. I have a nice supprise for once. Maybe someone can tell me if my
assumed answer to the following is correct.

I has a windows 98se machine. I backed up my hard drive on a cdrw (now net
card in it), I then used windiff from the 98 cd to compare the cd and d
drive. I found that one of the folders was too deep to be captured on my cd.
So I thought. The folder was there but no files. I have seen this before due
to depth. So what I did was move the offending folder up one level created
another cd. Compared that one to the d drive and it matched as expected.
Then compared to the other cd and found it indeed had the files the other
did not have.

Now the mystery. When I used windiff on my winxp pro machine and compared
the 2 cd's again (don't know why just did) I found both the cd's had all the
files. of course one folder was out of place but never the less all files on
both.

Here is what I think is the reason if someone can confirm it.

The cd software was smart enough to copy all the files to the cd disc
itself. However windows 98 could not read them from the cd due to the depth.
Windows xp on the other hand appears to be able to read a cd deeper. Are
these the correct facts, if not what happened here?

Thanks
Vince

I don't believe the operating system makes a difference.
The older CD burning software has a limit on file length. (100 characters?)
What is the used space on each CD?
